Budapest’s Neighborhood Stories - #01: David’s Kitchen
The journey from a fine dining establishment to a charming artisanal bakery.
The journey from a fine dining establishment to a charming artisanal bakery
Meet David, the baker, and his team/family—Leora and Ethan. David’s Kitchen is hidden in the heart of the Jewish quarter next to Klauzal tér. It’s a cozy, friendly neighborhood bakery with beautiful sunlight and a charming terrace during the warmer days.
Before David’s Kitchen, David and Leora owned the Michelin-recommended restaurant, Baraka, the first fine dining restaurant in town back in 2001, which unfortunately closed during the pandemic. This year in February, they embarked on a new journey, guided by over 20 years of baking knowledge and fine dining experience. The result is a friendly, quaint bakery that gives a little something to everyone, just like a warm hug. They hold themselves to a five-star standard, balancing it with fair prices.
As the passionate baker that he is, David starts the day before sunrise, making delicious bread from scratch and constantly developing seasonal dishes in the kitchen, where all the meals are freshly made every day. Thanks to his amazing team, they have created a delightful brunch/lunch menu that includes sweet and savory babkas, delicious sandwiches, and quite possibly the best shakshuka and hummus in town! My friend and I kept asking Leora for the secret to such creamy hummus, and in the end, the key is using the best quality ingredients and dedication to detail. That, and a bit of ice while blending the hummus! (Who would have known!)
Soon, there will be a deli section in the shop where you can come and grab delicious ready-meals and mezze to go for lunch or even an early dinner, as they are open until 6 pm from Thursday to Saturday, and until 4:30 pm on the other days.

Because all meals adopt seasonal ingredients and are freshly made, you never know what you will get on the day. It’s always full of surprises, but don’t worry, those all-time favorite options will always be there waiting for you.
If you have been following me for a while, you probably noticed that I am here often. I became a regular customer after my first visit. Their passion inspired me to start my “Budapest’s Neighborhood Stories” project. I believe there are many other spots like this out there, that have a special flavor and worthy of our attention. David's Kitchen marks my first interview article.
✍️Stay tuned @Budapest_foodapest for the next Budapest Neighborhood Story and let’s discover more local gems together.
